  • Dr. Lorraine Avery, RN, PhD

    Co-Lead

    Background and Training

    • Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

    • Completed Master of Nursing and a PhD in Community Health Sciences, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba

    • Obtained additional education in the development of clinical practice guidelines, McMaster University.

    • Completed addition education in the development of systematic reviews, University of Manitoba.

    Current Roles

    • Advanced Practice Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Cardiac Sciences, Winnipeg, MB, with 25 years experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

    • Assistant Professor, College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of MB (Nil Appt).

    • Clinician/research lead ‘Manage@home’ along with colleagues Dr. S. Udod and Dr. G. Halas.

    • Chair CNS Interest Group of MB.

    Clinical and Research Interests

    • Committed to advancing and advocating for the Clinical Nurse Specialist role, with a specific research focus on role evaluation.

    • With a health equity lens, committed to improving cardiovascular health outcomes.

    • Currently active in clinical research related to Acute Coronary Syndromes, transitions of care, educational needs of patients with heart disease and advocating and supporting safe transitions of care for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

    • Author / Co Author of several articles published in peer reviewed journals.

    Awards

    • 2020 Advocacy Award, Association of Regulated Nurses of MB. This award is presented to nurses with extensive years of service who had made significant contributions to the advanced of nursing.

    • 2019 Cardiovascular Health Promotion and Advocacy Excellence Award, Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses.

    • 2016 Clinical Nurse Specialist of the year, CNS Interest Group of MB.

  • Dr. John Ducas, MD, FRCPC

    Co-Lead and Medical Director

    Background and Training

    • Born in Montreal, 1952

    • Completed medical school (1976), training in Internal Medicine ((1980) and Cardiology (1982) at McGill University, in Montreal.

    • Licensed to practice Medicine in Manitoba and Nunavut.

    • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, certified in Cardiology (1983).

    • Moved to Winnipeg as a Research Fellow in Cardiology at the University of Manitoba in 1982.

    • Previous Head of Cardiology (1998-2002) at the University of Manitoba.

    • Previous Director of Catheterization Laboratories (1998-2018) at the University of Manitoba. Retired as active Interventional Cardiologist 2020.

    Current Roles

    • Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba; active teaching medical students, house staff and Cardiology fellows.

    • Currently the President “Bethune Bai Qiuen Canadian Alliance”, (BBCA) is a registered non-political, non-religious and not-for-profit corporation.

    • Currently Chairperson of the “Expert Advisory Committee on Medical Devices used in the Cardiovascular System” Therapeutic Products Directorate, Health Canada.

    Clinical and Research Interests

    • Committed to improving cardiovascular health outcomes in First Nations patients. Has been working as a Consulting Cardiologist on site at Norway House, Garden Hill, Hodgson and Rankin Inlet.

    • Currently active in clinical research related to Acute Coronary Syndromes, Coronary Atherosclerosis, and Interventional Cardiology.

    • Author / Co Author over 110 papers in peer reviewed journals and 7 book Chapters.

    • Previously a member of other national committees for the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and provincial committees for the Doctors Manitoba.

  • Dr. Shuangbo Liu, MD, FRCPC

    Background and Training

    • Born in Changchun, China

    • Moved to Canada at 9 years old

    • Medical school at the University of Manitoba (Class of 2011)

    • Internal Medicine and Adult Cardiology residency at the University of Manitoba

    • Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto

    • Assistant Professor of Medicine and Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

    • Interventional cardiologist

    • Clinician scientist

    • Director of Rotating Junior REsidents, Cardiology

    • AFC Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Research Director

    Clinical and Research Interests

    • Acute coronary syndrome, percutaneous coronary intervention outcomes

    • Women’s heart health including Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA)

    • Active in several local and national Research networks

    • Supervises high school, undergraduate and medical students as well as residents in research
