June is Canadian Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month, and the perfect time to discuss the unique risks of men, particularly around heart issues and heart disease. Be informed, be educated, know the risks, and act preventatively when it comes to health and wellness.
Are men at higher risk than women for heart issues and heart disease?
Although heart disease is sometimes thought of as a man’s disease, almost as many women die each year of heart disease. Women should also be vigilant about their heart health. Men have a higher likelihood of developing heart disease at an earlier age than women.
Why do men develop heart disease at an earlier age?
Younger men have higher rates of important risk factors for heart disease compared to women. These include higher rates of smoking, higher prevalence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and greater abdominal obesity. Premenopausal women are protected by the hormone estrogen. However, after menopause, the level of this hormone falls and the rate of heart disease in women rapidly rises.
How can men protect their heart health?
o Adopt a heart-healthy diet by incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats – while limiting salt, sugar, and saturated/trans fats.
o Engage in regular physical activity such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming for at least 150 minutes per week.
o Maintain a healthy weight by following a balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise.
o Don’t smoke, and limit alcohol – both increase heart disease risk.
o Manage stress levels through techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies and activities that promote relaxation.
o Know your blood pressure, your blood sugar and your cholesterol levels. Follow medical advice and take prescribed medications, if necessary.
o Limit processed foods and sugary beverages.
o See a healthcare provider for routine check-ups, exams, and screenings.
o Know the signs of a heart attack and dial 9-1-1 in case of warning signs.
